THE CONSORTIUM

The consortium is made up of 7 partners: 6 contractors and 1 subcontractor. Combined, the 7 partners have the expertise necessary for the successful outcome of the project. The co-ordinating partners, Centre for Science Society and Citizenship (Dr. Mordini) and University of Lancaster (Prof. Chadwick), are expert in the evaluation of the ethical inplications of biotechnology and have both managed other EC-funded research projects on the ethical, legal end social impact of new technologies, namely:

- Prof. Lie - University of Bergen - and Prof. Mossialos - London School of Economics and Political
Science - are world leaders in the field of globalisation of health and are currently managing two other EC-funded research projects that are highly relevant to the issues studied by the BIG project, namely:

- CTC ETHICS – ETHICAL ISSUES IN CLINICAL TRIAL COLLABORATIONS WITH DEVELOPING COUNTRIES – PROJECT REFERENCE: QLG3- CT- 1999-00957
- LSES –LIFE SCIENCES IN EUROPEAN SOCIETY – PROJECT REFERENCE: QLG7-1999-00286

Prof. Feichem, of the Institute for Global Health is a world key actor in the field of globalisation of health. The Institute’s projects include tha Global Health Forum, an initiative that provides an opportunity for leaders from tha public and private sectors to forge policy consensus and agree on actions concerning some of the most pressing global health issues of the day. The Institute organizes and hosts these by invitation, in long weekend meeting each on a selected topic. Most meetings of the Global Health Forum will give rise to an ongoing leadership network, comprising participants and others who will commit to continued engagement and work in the particular area of global health policy. Professor Feachem, who held the positions of Director and Senior Advisor for Health, Nutrition and Population at the World Bank From 1995-99, will provide the consortium with the opportunity of establishing relationships with institutions actively involved in globalisation processes such as the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund. The crucial role that the IGH plays in the globalisation processes of health makes it a key and obligatory partners of the BIG project. The IGH will partecipate as a subcontractor of the co-ordinator. The IGH will cover its own research expenses and the grant requested will just allow to cover expenses related to partecipation in the project meeting as well as the secretarial assistance.

Dr Fabbri, of the International Society Doctors for the Environment is an international NGO whose mandate is look at health diseases related to enviromental degradation. ISDE currently includes 38 members organisations woldwide. Dr Fabbri, who has been scientific officer of Greenpeace Italy since 1989, is currently the executive director of the ISDE scientific office. The function of the International Scientific Officeis to organise the activities of both the International Society of Doctors for the Environmental and the National Societies according to the Statutes of Association. It promotes, supports, coordinates and participates in studies and research, in training and informational activities regarding health and environmental issues. It facilitates the exchange of information between the International Scientific Office’s researchers and those of other institutions and it encourages the spread of scientific information and interdisciplinary collaboration. Dr. Fabbri will allow the consortium to listen at the voice of antiglobal movements and to establish relationship with key actors in this field such as NGOs and consumers’associations and groups.

Dr Giancarlo Cecchinelli of the Esa Image and Communication is a SME that provides a wide range of services for consumers, professionals and organisations. The company has gained considerable experience in the analysis and studies of markets – in particular carrying out research on the impact of new technologies on competitiveness – and in the production of questionnaires – including questionnaires based on the “Delphy Method”- , and in the elaboration of their results. Esa Communication provides the expertise for running the Delphy process and for managing the project web site.
